This is a simple introduction to the concept of soul retrieval from the perspective of core shamanism, which was popularized as a Western person’s accessible practice of shamanism for those not raised in traditional shamanic cultures. The author cites Sandra Ingerman and Michael Harner, early founders of core shamanism, in the bibliography. I’ve read longer books on the topic that didn’t actually say anymore than this book that fits in one hand. Originally written in German, it’s now in English, but no translator is mentioned. The author spends time in Hawaii so it is assumed she rewrote it in English by herself. The book itself is glossy and illustrated by some cute images, a couple courtesy of the author but most from stock photos.
Soul retrieval is a healing technique that shamanic practitioners use to bring lost soul parts back to a person who has suffered a trauma resulting in disassociation. The author is also a therapist and so she uses examples of situations in which she performed soul retrieval to illustrate why it is done, how it is done, and what to expect. Biritz advises that most anyone can do the exercises in her book but some people may still have to seek out the counsel of a professional, trained shaman.
Generally, the writing is light-hearted but causes of trauma such as physical and sexual abuse and the effects of trauma are addressed because soul retrieval is for healing. The author recounts a vision of her own past life in which she was murdered. Fortunately, the topics are mentioned but not retold so reading this isn’t likely to be traumatic.
I like that this book is concise and to the point and I think if you want to know basically what is a soul retrieval and how is it done in core shamanism, you will find your answer. The language of this author and core shamanism tends to come across as New Age even if it’s not. Readers should be aware that other culture’s versions of shamanism are both similar and different so don’t judge the breadth and scope of the practice by one book.
Recommended.
