The title of this double CD is taken from Chuck Brodsky’s work We are Each Other’s Angels, one of the cuts on disc one of this two CD set. Every song on the CD’s is angel-themed, and the proceeds support Hungry For Music’s instrument donation program. This CD may only be purchased through the website.

Nearly 40 artists contributed their talent to this CD, including David Lanz, George Winston, June Carter Cash and Graham Parker. There are various styles of music on these discs, some reminded me of early Bob Dylan, some were decidedly bluegrass, others more Gospel, some were more new age. Each one was clearly written from the heart. While the majority of music is vocal, there are some hauntingly beautiful instrumental works, such as David Lanz’ Angel of Joy.

What struck me about this work is the commitment on the part of Hungry For Music to produce a fundraising vehicle that matched so closely with their program of instrument donation.  While capitalizing on the popular resurgence of Angels, Hungry For Music has maintained dignity for the children they serve, as well as for the “spirit” of angels. Some of the titles include Tired Angels by Lenny McDaniel, Iris Dement’s Infamous Angel, and Dan Pelletier’s Angels of Unhappy Love. These works span a range of topics as well as styles, within the larger angel-themed context. It all seems to fit with the goals of Hungry For Music., which is “…to inspire disadvantaged children (and others) in Washington, D.C. by bringing positive musical and creative experiences into their lives… Your purchases also support our concert programs and creativity workshops for kids. Hungry for Music is also involved in presenting concerts at Washington, D.C. area homeless shelters and retirement homes.”

This would be a fine gift choice this holiday season for someone on your list that loves angels or if your gift giving includes gifts that support worthy causes. You certainly get a lot of music for your money.
