Originally published in 1984, Tarot For Your Self was the first book to discuss reading cards for personal insight (rather than fortune telling). The revised edition includes expanded minor arcana interpretations; an entirely new history-based appendix; information about shadow/teacher cards, a new introduction and an updated bibliography. Using meditations, rituals, spreads, mandalas, visualizations, dialogues, charts, affirmations, and other activities, you are assisted in establishing a personal relationship with the cards. Let me be clear: you will find this book frustrating if you have little imagination or intuition. If you prefer your tarot books to tell you exactly how to interpret each card in three sentences or if you are unwilling to spend time reading, processing and doing at least some of the exercises presented, you will hate this book. Ms. Greer asks you to think and process her ideas for yourself-- discarding what you don’t find useful and adding your personal views to make reading cards a unique experience.  I was lucky enough to get one of the original copies back in the mid 80s, and to this day it is one of the best beginner's books available. Unlike most beginner books, which are mostly interpretations and card descriptions, Tarot for Your Self is illustrated with cards from several different decks and there is enough information here to keep even a veteran reader interested. There are sections on keeping a tarot journal, dealing with moods, emotions and relationships, the court cards, prosperity and planning, and healing. There is enough here that I suggest readers give themselves a year to read, practice and grow while working through the exercises. It is truly a workbook and not just a text, but whether you want to use the cards to predict the future, access the Divine, or for personal growth and exploration, it is the perfect place to start your studies, or even to expand upon them. Tarot For Your Self will guide you into new and unexpected territory.  ~review by Lisa Mc Sherry by Mary K. Greer New Page Books2002 pp. 300, $18.99
